A Surprise Proposal Beneath Plantation Oak on Jekyll Island
There is something so special about photographing a surprise proposal. The nerves, the excitement, and knowing you're about to document a moment that will only happen once.
For this Jekyll Island proposal, the couple traveled from out of state for a trip to the Georgia coast — and they decided it would be the perfect place to begin their next chapter together. Their sweet pup came along for the adventure too, making the proposal even more personal.
The plan was to meet beneath Plantation Oak, one of Jekyll Island's most beautiful and historic live oaks, before heading to Crane Cottage for portraits together.
Plantation Oak created such a beautiful setting for the proposal. With its enormous branches and Spanish moss creating a natural canopy, it felt quiet, intimate, and completely fitting for such an important moment.
And then, she said yes.
After the Proposal
Once the surprise was over and the ring was officially on her finger, we headed over to Crane Cottage to celebrate with some engagement portraits around the property.
The gardens and historic architecture gave us a completely different backdrop from Plantation Oak and created such a romantic setting for their first portraits as an engaged couple.
Their pup joined in for a few portraits too, making the session feel even more like them and capturing their little family during such a special season.
I love this part of proposal sessions — once the nerves are gone, couples can finally relax and enjoy what just happened. We walked around the property, laughed, admired the ring, spent time with their dog, and captured portraits to remember the beginning of this new chapter.
A Moment Worth Remembering
A proposal is about so much more than the ring or the location. It's about the person you're choosing to spend your life with, the life you've already built together, and the future you're stepping into.
Being able to document that moment — especially when you've traveled from somewhere else to celebrate it — is something I never take for granted.
For couples traveling to Jekyll Island from out of state and planning a surprise proposal, Plantation Oak and the grounds of the Jekyll Club offer a beautiful combination of history, nature, and romance.
Whether Jekyll Island is a place you've visited together before or you're discovering it for the first time, it's such a meaningful place to begin your next chapter.
And if your dog is part of your story, bring them along. They deserve to be part of the celebration too.
